Sample Genealogy Websites

We have created four genealogy websites which can be used as examples of the design principles proposed in our book "Getting Started on Your Genealogy Website." These are working genealogy websites which we have created in the course of our own personal genealogy work. .

Genealogy Essay Website
The genealogy essay website contains a high quality piece of writing about the author's family and often features a particular episode or interesting story in the family’s history. It is a simple website to implement and the perfect type of starter website. The genealogy essay website consists of one web page containing the contents of the genealogy essay.

This particular genealogy essay website tells the story of J. J. Poill, a notorious character who may have committed murder and changed his identity to escape arrest. This genealogy essay website uses the free ad-supported website granted by www.genealogyhosting.com when a domain name is registered.

Surname Website
The surname website presents the genealogy of all the people with a given surname. Also, the surname website facilitates communication with fellow genealogists especially descendants of the surname. The surname website is an excellent project matching the research efforts of the author. As the author's research progresses the surname website grows with it and is always a valuable tool for instant lookups.

This surname website presents documentation on the Mannigel surname. The family originated in Gerrmany and came first to Wisconsin in the 1867 then onto South Dakota. The Mannigel surname is very difficult to research due to the loss of records during World War II.

Elusive Ancestor Website
The elusive ancestor website presents and proves a theory about a very difficult ancestor. The elusive ancestor website presents the total information about the elusive ancestor so that other genealogists can contribute their advice and possibly scraps of information about the elusive ancestor.

This elusive ancestor webiste presents our theory about J. J. Poill introduced in the Genealogy Essay Website above. This website pieces together circumstantial evidence to prove that J. J. Poill was, in fact, John H. Pyle who was the son of Nicholas Pyle and Mary Ann Westbrook. After committing murder in California in 1870, he left his wife and children and escaped to Oregon. In Oregon, he married (committing bigomy) and started a new family.

Genealogy Workbench Website
The genealogy workbench is a research tool for the genealogist containing access to internet websites as well as reference information used frequently by the author. The genealogy workbench collects and consolidates the author’s research resources into one handy package.

This paricular example of a genealogy workbench website contains not only a comprehensive set of hyperlinks to my work environment, but also a contact page, an online forum and a guest book. In this way, I am able to reach-out and communicate with my fellow genealogists.
